Microsoft Power BI is the Microsoft answer for the Self-Service BI market, currently dominated by tools like Tableau and QlikView. The roots of this technology go back to 2009 with the Power Pivot for Excel Extension. It evolved to Power Pivot, Power Query and Power View (and latelly Power Maps), and is still available in Office 365 ProPlus Excel. The Power BI product actually has two components:
- Power BI Desktop, to develop cliente-side BI Analysis and eventually upload to the server
- Power BI Web Site, to develop, publish and share your BI Analysis in public or privat mode
As usual the first one is for FREE, and the second one has a FREE and a payed version, with many advantages for the second. But the good news is that a FREE Book has been releases by Microsoft Virtual Academy:
The book is REALLY good!
It is extremely well structured around a Budgeting challenge, and chapter-after-chapter you get deeper and deeper. If you want to make a move in the Self-Service BI tools, Power BI, and this book, deserves a try.
By the way, you may create a public link of your BI Analysis and include in an ASP.NET MVC Application: EasyLOB has an example of this feature in the Chinook DEMO Application.
